GROUP URGES BETTY GRABLE STAMP

LAGUNA NIGUEL, Calif. August 14, 2000 – A group of fans of the late Betty Grable, World War II pin-up queen and top female box office star of all time, has formed for the purpose of getting the U.S. Post Office to issue a stamp featuring Grable’s likeness.
    Called LEGS (League to Establish Grable Stamp), the group, headed by Bob Isoz, includes movie great Debbie Reynolds. According to Isoz and Reynolds, both long time friends and fans of Grable’s, the star should be honored for her morale building efforts during WWII. “She was the inspiration for a fighting nation during both WWII and the Korean conflict,” said Isoz, a Las Vegas resident.
    The photo of Grable looking over her shoulder in a one-piece bathing suit was the number one pin-up of World War II and possibly of all time. Even Joseph Stalin was reported to have the famous photo on his desk. So symbolic is Grable of America, that a reference is made to her by a captured German soldier in the recent film, “Saving Private Ryan.”
    Spero Pastos, author of a 1986 Grable biography, describes the famous photo as a “pop icon of patriotism, a living symbol of all that is good about America.”
    Debbie Reynolds says of Grable, “I had the privilege of knowing Betty as a friend. She was an inspiration to me when I was first starting out in the Business, but, as we became more acquainted, my admiration for her grew even more. [During WWII, she represented what every serviceman was fighting to protect.”
    “We are encouraging a flood of letters that the Stamp Advisory Committee cannot ignore. It’s time we thank Betty for her contributions to the war effort and the wholesome entertainment she provided for years. Like Coca Cola and apple pie, she is America,” said Isoz.
    Grable, who passed away from cancer in 1973, still holds the box office record for consecutive placement in the Exhibitors’ Poll of top ten box office stars. She was the first woman to achieve #1 box office status in 1943 and made the top ten list from 1942 through 1951.
